Cost and pricing

How much does AC repair cost in Houston?

Most single-part repairs land between $150 and $900 including the diagnostic visit. Capacitors and contactors run $100–$400, fan and blower motors $200–$1,500, compressors and coils $900–$2,800. The full table with sources and an update date is on our AC repair cost page.

How much is a typical HVAC service call in Houston?

The diagnostic visit runs $75–$200 across most Houston contractors, usually credited toward the repair if you approve the work. After-hours calls add a $100–$300 surcharge. Both numbers should be quotable on the phone before anyone drives out — ask, and be cautious of any company that will not answer.

What is the $5,000 rule for HVAC?

Multiply the system's age by the repair quote. Over $5,000 total, replacement is usually the smarter spend. A 10-year-old system needing a $400 capacitor scores 4,000 — repair it. A 12-year-old system needing a $1,900 compressor scores 22,800 — put that money toward a new system with a fresh warranty instead.

Which part of an AC is the most expensive to repair?

The compressor: $1,300–$2,800 installed in Houston. Evaporator and condenser coils follow at $900–$2,800. At those prices, always verify the manufacturer parts warranty status first — most brands cover compressors for 5–10 years, and a warranted part cuts the bill to labor and refrigerant.

Are free AC repair estimates really free?

Usually "free estimate" means a free quote for new equipment or replacement — not free diagnosis of a broken system. Real diagnosis takes a technician's time and instruments, so legitimate companies charge a service call fee. Ask exactly what the visit costs and whether the fee is credited toward the repair.

Why did I get quoted such different prices for the same repair?

Houston has hundreds of licensed HVAC contractors with different labor rates, parts sourcing and warranty terms. Differences of 20–30% between quotes are normal. What is not normal: a quote with no diagnosis behind it, a price that will not be put in writing, or pressure to decide on the spot.

Emergencies and scheduling

What counts as an AC emergency?

Total cooling loss during a heat wave with infants, elderly or medically vulnerable people in the home; water actively leaking through a ceiling; burning or electrical smells; a breaker that trips the instant the AC starts. Warm air on a mild evening can usually wait for a regular appointment. See our emergency AC repair page for the full list.

Do you offer 24-hour AC repair in Houston?

Our dispatch line is answered 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM CT, 7 days a week — we do not claim 24/7 dispatch we cannot staff. When you call, you get an honest answer immediately: a technician tonight if one is available, or the first window in the morning. No "tech is 10 minutes away" scripts.

How much does emergency AC repair cost?

Expect a $100–$300 after-hours surcharge on top of the diagnostic fee and the repair itself. A nighttime capacitor replacement typically totals $250–$600. The surcharge is stated before dispatch — if a company will not quote it on the phone, that tells you something.

What should I do while waiting for the technician?

If you see ice, water or smell burning: turn the system off at the thermostat. Otherwise close blinds on sun-facing windows, run fans, and keep everyone in the coolest room. Do not repeatedly reset a tripping breaker — that converts a repairable fault into a destroyed compressor.

Parts and problems

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

The usual suspects in order: dirty filter, dead capacitor or tripped breaker at the outdoor unit, low refrigerant from a leak, frozen coil, failed condenser fan motor, worn compressor. The first two are five-minute self-checks; the rest need a technician. Full walkthrough: AC running but not cooling.

Why is my outside AC fan not spinning?

Almost always the fan capacitor, the contactor, or the fan motor itself — $100–$700 depending on which. Turn the system off: a compressor running without its fan overheats, and a cheap repair becomes the most expensive one on the list. Details: outside AC fan not spinning.

Why is my AC leaking water inside?

A clogged condensate drain line in the vast majority of cases — Houston systems pull gallons of water from the air daily, and algae clogs the drain. Clearing it runs $75–$250. Full guide: AC leaking water inside.

Can an AC compressor be repaired?

The compressor itself is a sealed unit and is essentially never repaired — but a large share of "dead compressor" diagnoses are actually failed capacitors, contactors or hard-start kits costing $150–$450. A real diagnosis tests those first. More: compressor repair.

Do AC stop-leak products work?

The sealants sold in auto parts stores are automotive products. In a home system they can clog the metering device, contaminate the refrigerant circuit and void the compressor warranty. Professional leak repair means finding and fixing the leak point, then recharging by weight.

Why does my AC freeze up?

Ice on the coil or lines means airflow starvation (dirty filter, failing blower) or low refrigerant. Turn the system off and let it thaw completely — running a frozen system destroys compressors. Then fix the root cause, because a thawed system with the same cause freezes again within days.

Choosing a contractor

How do I choose an AC repair company in Houston?

Check three things: a real TDLR Air Conditioning & Refrigeration contractor license (verify it free on the TDLR license search), Google or BBB reviews you can read on the source platform, and willingness to state the diagnostic fee and after-hours surcharge on the phone. Everything else is marketing.

How do I check a Texas HVAC license?

Texas requires air conditioning contractors to hold a TDLR Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (ACR) contractor license. You can verify any company's license number, class and status in minutes on the TDLR public license search. If a company will not give you its license number, do not let it touch your refrigerant circuit.

Who actually does the work when I call?

AC Repair Houston is a dispatch service: we route your call to an independent, Texas-licensed (TDLR) HVAC contractor serving your area, and that contractor performs and stands behind the work. Ask for the servicing contractor's name and license when you book — you are entitled to both.

Do you show reviews on this site?

No — and deliberately. This site shows no testimonials because we will not publish reviews we cannot link to a source. When you call, ask for the servicing contractor's Google or BBB profile and read the real thing on the platform where it lives.

Areas and coverage

Which areas do you serve?

Houston proper plus Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, Pearland, Cypress, Spring, Pasadena and The Heights, across Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery and Brazoria counties. ZIP codes and drive times are on the service areas page. Calling from elsewhere in Greater Houston? Call anyway — we will tell you honestly whether we can reach you today.

Do you service my AC brand?

Partner technicians service all major residential brands: Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, Ruud, American Standard, Bryant, York, Daikin and Amana, including heat pumps and ductless mini splits. For mini splits, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, LG, Gree and MrCool are also covered.

Do you repair window AC units or car AC?

No car AC — that is a different trade. For window units, we give an honest answer on the phone: sealed-system repairs on window units rarely make financial sense out of warranty, and we would rather tell you that than bill a diagnosis on a $250 appliance.
